Personal Instant Messaging
Personal Instant Messaging (Personal IM) is an initiative designed to enable mobile users worldwide to exchange instant messages across networks.
With Personal IM, instant messaging is no longer restricted to the fixed Internet world. It offers the opportunity to connect the mobile community across all networks and geographic boundaries.
It is not limited to specific Internet communities and with 'Presence' functionality available through IM, users can see in real time the status of their contact list and can get in touch with the right person the first time.
In recognition of the significant potential of Personal IM, the GSMA Board began the initiative in 2005 and a steering group of operator members was established to lead the programme.
With more than 30 operators offering live services, Personal IM is helping to bridge the gap between mobile users around the world.
